My Hifi System - Part 6 - Susheela Raman rocks on Playstation 1

While many gamers took Sony Playstation 1 (Model SPCH 1002) for a dinosaur, some bright spark Audiophile had a Eureka moment with this little toy. I was one of those few lucky ones to pick one up for $50 before they ran out.

Ever since I have brought home this piece of history I have treasured it like my other high-end gear. The sound coming out of this microcosm is simply magical. It is versatile, warm and well balanced enough to formidably challenge many new CD players within the price range of $500-1000.

However when compared to my Rotel RCD 1072 I noticed this little baby lacked the punch and oomph in the lower ranges which the Rotel delivered with ease. Then again for $50 it is the best CD player anyone can buy.

In this clip I have used Australian born Susheela Ramans version of Yeh mera dewana pan hai from her album Salt Rain. This legendary classic is from the bygone days of Bollywood. Susheela has very tactfully improvised it by giving it a modern jazzy air, while still nurturing the nostalgic raga (melody/mood) the masterpiece was originally sung in.

My attempt here is to support the comments many audiophiles across the globe have made on PS1's performance, and at the same time eradicate some myths that claim this little beast can give $4000 CD players a run for their money.

Also featuring in the clip are the Chord Chameleon Silver Plus interconnects which by far are the sweetest and the most neutral cables I have ever used.
