Silicon-coated paper is that shiny paper backing on labels and makes a good transfer paper for printing a laser print on to metal or wood printmaking plates. In this 5-minute video, Seattle artist and press maker Bill Ritchie uses "silitransfer" to put a scanned drawing on to a thin copper plate so he can make a drypoint. Bill is a teacher, and is using this video to answer an email question from an art student in Hong Kong.

  • does this paper work on ink printers?

  • Ink won't stick to the silicon (nothing sticks to it!) but if you turn your darkness down way low, like 20%, it may work for transferring to wood, SafetyKut or linoleum. On metals I'm using HEAT to MELT the toner of the laser printer to make it transfer and stick to the metal. A friend does relief prints on wood and SafetyKut, and at full dark it smears; she cut back to light, and it didn't smear.
