I discuss the current legislation to hand out balck reparatiions in congress. They are asking for $8 million to research about black reparations. The government already handed out reparations for the Japanese WWII families that were detained briefly. That legislation was done under the shadow of the 1988 Civil Liberties Act, and it was finalized by President Ronald Reagan. They also handed out reparations to Guam, as an apology for Japan, when Japan attacked Guam. I pose the question, should Black receive reparations? A lot of descendants of slaves are still, to this very day: illeterate, undernurished, unaware of the very strides that Martin Luther King Jr and others fought for. Also, after civil rights Blacks went from being underpriviledged, to being encarcerated directly as a result of the civil rights marches and the Vietnam protests.

As you well know slavery could not have even existed with out the willing participation of African warlords of that day. Slavers pulled into port and purchased prisoners of war. So the first place you might consider looking for payment is Mother Africa and her people.

There has been Conquering and Slavery since after the Garden of Eden. It is a product of sin. The Americas were the last frontier, Just be glad it has ended, and get over it. It is a shame, but me being born to two Alcoholics, and growing up poor is a shame too, where's my reparations? If we go back in time throughout history, Me do-Pershia, stuff in China we will never know about, The Assyrians, BAbylon, All these countries conquered people and took slaves. So if we retro-reparate?

@1pick2sticks I'm sorry for your upbringing, but what does ancient history have to do with a discussion on reparations?

1. up until a decade ago Blacks were hung from trees on a MASSIVE scale

2. just 40 years ago, Blacks were attacked, homes burned and all of their money looted, and thousands killed

3. just 40 years ago, nationwide, Black communities were broken up and their wealth completely stolen

4. just 40 years ago redlining was still in effect.

This isn't ancient history.

@uratrick They it is believe thought it would be their type of slavery, and.. that is like stating that you should only punish the supplies of drugs and not the users.. We then continued it, even though those people were born into it, they then for many exercised their choice and ended it. I do not believe we should make payment, but we need to make sure we educate people, maybe most of all HOW to use money. Then it might through teaching make all the difference :)

I myself went to not George Washington Elementary, but Booker T. Washington. Growing up I have seen what people can do when you are raised not looking at color, but at people.

Sadly, it changed once we got to high school more, people tended to "hangout" with people like themselves in looks.. save. In marching band. No matter your race, you were a band personYou were a musician and you loved music mutually

For me, I hope for a day where we are all Americans, and love the same.

@shakaama To start, you really hit upon important points. I discussed with our local NAACP representative these things and he believe as you stated the stigma of affirmative action has caused great issues. I myself not being of any minority status save Native American in (1/16), but being in a culture of acceptance in a university town have seen how things can work, but also how they cannot.

America is not the richest country in the world. It ranks 8th in per capita income. Hate the wealthy? Give to the less fortunate? "Even the playing field" ? Others are:

To even the playing field, we must "de-develop the rich countries" , redistribute the wealth globally (take your income). How does socialism look to you now? I don't think black Americans are going to get anything from Obama.
