Ernest Shackleton sailed 800 miles in an 18-foot whaler, the James Caird, (from Elephant Is to South Georgia Is) with the help of a sextant, a pocketwatch and a compass they saved from the Endurance... The journey gave them only one bright sunshine day to calculate position...and the waves they met were enourmous. No GPS, no radio, just English resilience and a Swedish boat!
