Tipping in American restaurants is a cultural thing, designed to give the customer control over who stays in the profession (good servers) and who leaves (bad servers). By having that last drink instead of saving $ for a tip, Sharice and her friends demonstrated selfish abandon of cultural boundaries.

One could extrapolate from her actions that she would also be comfortable farting in church or slapping an Iranian man with a shoe just because she feels like it. SELFISH.

However, on the rare occasions I DID get stiffed, I caught up with the offending patron, handed back their 'gratuity' and sweetly told them 'if that's all you can afford to leave you need it more than I do!' Worked like a charm!

As for the 'if I don't got it, I don't got it' defence - that's pathetic! If you don't like/agree with the custom of tipping don't go to places where it is expected.

@kristalblair Then organize, fight the laws and rules and get the regular minimum wage. And don't say you can't other nations I visited the staff get paid properly and get tips or they have a modest service charge. I'm not your employer I'm the customer your income should be from your employer and then if I tip a bit say 5-10% its EXTRA as it should be. Stop whining to your customers to pay you its your boss and the laws that need changing.

Honestly, if I can't afford to tip. I won't to a restaurant. I get take out or in the worst scenario I cook my own steak. LOL

@vasp99 If your mandating your tip on top of the bill then why not just raise the food prices 10% and pay you a proper wage in Florida they have to pay servers $4.29 and they didn't shoot up food prices. So why not just raise that meal from $5.00 to $5.50 and pay the server the state minimum wage in my states case of $7.31 an hour? Then tipping could be lower if done at all and you get a proper wage as a base.

@vasp99 I do tip a flat ,to the penny, 8% at restaurants I did that in any nation where its courteous to do so. So on a check of $6 I will leave exactly 48 Cents. Anyone else where there is no set fee ,bathroom attendants, I leave 50 cents. That is enough.

@vasp99 I'm not a thief if I don't tip its a gratuity, you have an employer who is responsible for your wages and benefits. So if I tip nothing, five percent or ten percent you get what I decide to generously give you.
