A slideshow containing several photos involving US
Airways and the crash landing in the Hudson River, New York City, on 1/15/2009 at around 3:30 PM Eastern time.
Congratulations to the pilot for successfully ditching the plane and saving people on board.
Out of all 155 people on board, 0 died.

Note : I created the text version of this and it took me FOREVER. There are some mistakes and I didn't include communications between LGA departure and other planes apart from Eagle 57418.



Transcript :
ATC : Cactus 1549, turn left heading 270.
US 1549 : Hey, um, this is Cactus 1549, hit birds through, lost thrust on both engines, heading back towards La Guardia.
ATC : Ok, err you need to return to La Guardia. Turn left to a heading of 220
US 1549 : 220.
ATC (to La Guardia Tower): Tower, stop your departures, got an emergency returning.
La Guardia Tower : Who is it?
ATC : 1549, he's uh got a birdstrike, lost all engi- lost thrust in the engines and is returning immediately.
La Guardia tower : Cactus 1549, which engine(s)?
ATC : He lost thrust in BOTH engines, he said.
La Guardia Tower : Got it.
ATC : Cactus 1549, could you get in to see if you could land runway 13?
US 1549 : We're unable. We may end up in the Hudson.
ATC : A'ight cactus 1549, it can be in left traffic, runway 31.
US 1549 : Unable.
ATC : Ok, what d'ya need to land? -pause- Cactus 1549, runway 4 is available if you want to make left traffic onto runway 4.
US 1549 I'm not sure we could make runway 4, what's over to our right, anything in New Jersey, maybe Teterboro.
ATC : OK off to your right side there's Teterboro airport. -pause- Do you want to try to go to Teterboro?
US 1549 : Yes.
-phone rings- ATC: Teterboro, uh Empire, actually La Guardia Departure, got an emergency inbound.
Teterboro : Hey, go ahead.
ATC : Cactus 1549 over the George Washington bridge wants to go to the airport right now.
Teterboro : Does he need assistance?
ATC : Er yeah, there was a birdstrike. Can he come in for Runway 1?
Teterboro : Runway 1, that's good.
ATC : Cactus 1549, turn right 280 landing runway 1 in Teterboro.
US 1549 : We can't do it.
ATC : Ok which runway do you want at Teterboro?
US 1549 : We're gonna be in the Hudson.
ATC : I'm sorry, say again Cactus?
US 1549 : -Silence-
ATC : A'ight -pause- Cactus, err Cactus 1549 radar contact is lost, you also got Newark Airport at 2 o'clock about 7 miles
US 1549 : -silence-
ATC : Eagle 54718, turn left heading 210
Eagle 54718 : 210, 4718. I dunno I think he said he was going in the Hudson
ATC : Cactus 1549, respond?
US 1549 : -silence-

  • I like how the eagle flight goes "I dont know I think he said he was going in the hudson"

  • Honestly, if I had an airplane call up with an engine failure with very few options to get down safely, getting the call sign correct would be the least of my worries. And in the controller's defense, the first call up from Cactus 1549 sounded more like "1539". It's understandable why he didn't get it right. But like I said, it doesn't matter. All that matters is helping him get down safely.
