Police horses out and about
There was an unusual sight around Wrexham yesterday (Thursday) when the North Wales Police mounted section went out on patrol for the first time.
Members of the public flocked to meet two of the horses as they patrolled around Acton and Borras.
And as school children from Acton Park Junior and Infants Schools stroked the horses they were given an insight into their role within the community.
Deputy Chief Constable Clive Wolfendale said: "This is a fantastic day in the history of North Wales Police. I'm very excited and pleased to introduce the mounted section.
"I know from experience what a fabulous impact they can have on community policing. The impact they have on children is fantastic. Building a bond between police and young people is so important and the horses have a great role to play in that."
The four horses will be stabled at Erddig, but Chief Superintendent Phill Thomson stressed that it is a North Wales unit.
"It's all about community policing, visibility and neighbourhood policing which are important to the communities we police," said Chief Supt Thomson.
"The horses are six times more visible than officers on foot," he explained, as people made their way over to the animals as soon as they spotted them on the corner of the shopping centre.
The unit has cost £200,000 to set up and will have a running cost of £100,000 a year.
I wanna do that!
