Former Speaker of the House of Commons, Betty Boothroyd, take the oath at the beginning of the new Parliament.

Before taking her seat, Baroness Boothroyd took the Oath of Allegiance:
"I do swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors, according to law. So help me God."

  • I don't know why but whenever I look at Boothroyd, I think she should play Agatha Christie's Miss Marple.

  • @MassCityGent: Originally they were offered to become Viscounts. Nowadays they are only given one of those ghastly life peerages

  • @Niflheim13 By convention they're always granted a peerage, but doesn't happen "automatically" in the sense of no action having to be taken for it to happen.

  • @Niflheim13 Oh, I didn't know that. I love Former Speaker Boothroyd. That makes sense to honor them for their service in that way.
