UPDATE: 200,000 views! Wow! You guys are AWESOME!!!

Ten Ferrari 458 Italia supercars have been crashed or wrecked by fire within the last three months. Four of them were ruined by fire and six were written off in accidents.

Ferrari won't comment on the bizarre series of events, but the Italian company has confirmed it is investigating three of the fires. A spokesman said it is taking them "very seriously".

The fourth 458 was destroyed because the car was parked in a warehouse that burned down.

The 458 Italia's unusually high accident rate was brought to light when a number of pictures were uploaded to supercar crash website Wrecked Exotics.

Crashes involving supercars aren't unusual because their high power makes it easy to lose control, especially in the hands of inexperienced drivers; it's thought at least two of the six crashed Ferraris belonged to supercar clubs.

There's no suggestion that any of the crashes were the result of a fault with the car. Still, the frequency of 458 smashes is remarkable, as is the range of circumstances surrounding each.

A black 458 span off the road during rainy weather in Buckinghamshire, while in the Czech Republic a brand new model was driven into a ditch just six hours after its owner collected it. Another hit a tree just outside Ferrari's Maranello factory at only one-day old.
The 458 Italia debuted at September 2009's Frankfurt Motor Show and costs £170,000 - though it's so in demand that cars are still changing hands way above that price. It covers 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds and has a 202mph top speed.

NEW NEWS:

Following the recent bad publicity and reporting of Ferrari's 458 Italia supercar catching fire, an official recall has been put in place for all 1,248 examples delivered to customers.

A spokesperson for Ferrari told Yahoo! Cars that: "When the car is driven hard [so the exhaust is hot] in high ambient temperatures, the adhesive used in the wheelarch assembly can overheat and allow the heat shields to move around. In extreme cases, they touch the exhaust and the adhesive can begin to smoke and even potentially catch fire."

Ferrari's technicians have developed a solution that involves replacing the adhesive with mechanical fasteners. All owners of the 458 Italia will be contacted and the fix will be carried out free of charge.

A total of 1,248 Italias have been produced and delivered to the end of July. The Ferrari factory always stops production for August, so all cars produced from this month on (September 2010) will feature the modifications.

Some media outlets have reported that the fires may be caused by a problem with a vent in the fuel system, but Ferrari has confirmed that is in relation to an entirely separate service repair notice and it has no associated fire risk.

To date, five cars are thought to have caught fire because of the overheating adhesive; none of these are in the UK.

  • I would just like to say i drive a 2004 Ford Fiesta, it's not as stylish, good looking or as fast as a Ferrari 458, but not once has it randomly burst into flames.

    what is this?

  • Cursed? It's nothing but karma..

  • "458's are naturally set ablaze by sunlight if it gets hot enough- Top Gear"

  • @TomWright92 Yesh

  • @Andreasy2 No, it's something that all 458's originally came out of the factory with. Y'see, in a Ferrari the exhaust can get pretty hot, and that heat needs to be contained by heat-resistant materials in the back of the car. For some reason, some clown decided to glue them on with a flammable glue (umm wtf). When there's some spirited driving involved in the owner's hands (it's a Ferrari...) and the red-hot exhaust touches this flammable glue, you get a barbeque on wheels.

  • bad wiring?
