Delta & Mississippi Queens - July 1999

Here are the Delta and Mississippi Queens together. I don't remember where this was. The whistles on both boats are wonderful.

The Delta Queen was built in the 20's, while the Mississippi Queen was built in the 70's. Both are steam powered.

Both boats are now out of service, with the Delta Queen in Chattanooga, TN being used for a floating hotel. The Mississippi Queen is in New Orleans awaiting her fate. The company that ran her went bankrupt.

I do believe this video is of both boats in Vicksburg, MS. The American Queen is being returned to active cruising in 2012 and she will be joined by the new vessel just launched in July Queen of the Mississippi. From what I understand the Delta Queen can resume sailing if legislation would get passed.

@Gary198101 I never made into Mississippi on this trip. I believe that this was shot somewhere south of St. Louis in Missouri, or on the Illinois side of the river.

@Gary198101 As soon as the Delta Queen returns to the river I'll pull out my checkbook and book a Cincinatti to New Orleans cruise. I have no interest in the American Queen or a new boat.

@criind This video was definitely taken at Cape Girardeau, Missouri which is not far south of St. Louis on the Missouri side of the river. I think this is during the great steamboat race where both boats race from New Orleans to St. Louis with stops along the way.

i have so many memories from the Mississippi Queen, it is a real heartbreak that it no longer exists.

This is a sad time that we no longer have a proper overnight river cruise boat. No overnight steamboats. The Mississipp Queen is being cut up for scrap and the Delta Queen is a floating hotel. As of now only the Delta Queen has a chance to return to the rivers.
