Harryette Mullen admits to being "licked all over by the English tongue." Her fifth poetry collection, Sleeping with the Dictionary, published by UC Press, was a finalist for the National Book Award and for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Poetry for its "gleeful pursuit of the ludic pleasure of word games." Her work combines the experimentation of the French OULIPO group with an American funk and political awareness. Mullen is associate professor of English and African American Studies at UCLA. Her other books include Muse & Drudge and Trimmings. Series: "Lunch Poems Reading Series" [11/2004] [Humanities] [Show ID: 9094]

  • concluded... Because of the intrinsic complexity of your poems my dark cousins of poetry we white people never sure can be of our birth righted ability to cogitate and reflect on your colorfully worded thoughts. If there in this attempted analogy are offensive words from me; then kindly accept my most humble apology.

  • continued... Learn to swim much better or stay out of my literary pool. Go buy some water wings you timid milk toothed things. I doubt it’ll do you any good because I will not tame the dark tempestuous seas of my mind for you”… Harryette Mullen’s poetry speaks volumes to me of black American culture and how slavery either tainted or seasoned the “dishes” of their poetry. Or am I wrong? Did I totally misinterpret everything?

  • Squall speaking of the rebellion against white people apparent in the prose seeking in her throws of passion upon the page of history. Dare she say, “Here is yo chicken; you kill, you clean and cook to prepare it ‘cause I ain't gwines to do it. My people worked too long for you. If in my words some sustenance you seek, then dig down deep white folks for my treasures will not be served to you on silver platter. Wha’s the matter? Am I too deep for you?”
