The first part of a Channel 4 documentary covering the career of legendary black bare knuckle boxer, Bill Richmond; his nemesis, the rather scary Tom Cribb; and Richmond's ill-fated protege, Tom Molineaux. Look out for a brief cameo by Lord Byron too. Experts interviewed for the show include noted scholar and author David Dabydeen.

The documentary itself was produced by Juniper Films, and was first shown as part of C4's 'Georgian Underground' series on the 1st of May, 2003. It was shown again by C4 on the 11th of September, 2009.

You might find this useful if you're interested in Georgian History, Black British history, slavery, bare knuckle boxing, Tom Cribb or Western Martial Arts. Or if you just like a good scrap.

  • A time when the Englishman was the toughest man on the planet. Shame about todays sad state of affairs

  • 4 people need a milling

  • @llayla8921 I think you've taken one too many blows to the head.

  • @webleybulldog455: True man, this is old boxing, thumbs up to the British for creating such an art!

  • I am not going to lie, I probably would have been a pickpocket.

  • Its easy for those of us that understand bare-knuckle. Put the gloves in and you defend with the gloves. Take away the gloves, oh boy. The bare-knuckle stance looked hokey, but the stance allowed for punching, kicking, throwing, even a few submission holds. Its a very good self-defense system.

  • @eslubin My sentiment exactly...especially since Washington's family the De Hertburn's came to the Manor at County Durham with William the Conqueror.

  • @Shemra So was George Washington

  • @eslubin Richmond was born a subject of the British Empire...
