The original theme tune used at the start of the show was 40 seconds long and was written by Harry South.
CLOSING MUSIC The tune used at the end of the show was similar, but much slower and sounds really quite moody.
This is the second film sequence used for the Sweeney credits.
These two original 40 second pieces have never been commercially released, but there are many reproductions that have been made available

  • Brilliant episode is Nightmare. No cop show since has ever come close to matching The Sweeney's brilliance.

  • Why did John Thaw never receive a knighthood??? Scandalous. Arise SIR JOHN THAW .

  • lookout guv, eh's got a shootah!

  • Good theme!

Cops today in Britain should be like Regan punching the perp!

  • Has'nt aged very well has it?...Those cars!...jeez

  • @thefranksterboy Almost entirely within a thjree mile radius of Hammersmith which was the production base. Occasionally it ventured further, such as the City and Farringdon, Peckham in the first episode, and Wimbledon Village.

  • @sunderlandgent The Queen would most likely say to John - "Get Your Trousers On, You're Knighted !

  • Always liked the Sweeney closing theme. Quite innovative in that the producers went for a downbeat tone to end the episode.

It hinted at a weariness and melancholy beneath the flash.

Or maybe Regan was just pissed off with hairy arsed villains on his manor.

  • Where about's in London was The Sweeney actually filmed?

  • It's nice to hear the ending music without some big mouthed annoying TV continuity presenter talking over it.

  • top show and a great classic
