'It Don't Mean a Thing if it ain't Got That Swing' - Ellington. This was recorded first in midi format, and annotations added later.
It was improvised in the quirky style that is sometimes used by such people as Harry Connick Jr, Jessica Williams, and of course Monk- with the deliberate 'stumbles' in time, the cluster discords that sound like mistakes, and the deliberately stilted time. I tried to copy this simple, primitive, naive style. Also, I have small hands, so the stride style is simplified with no stretches, and can be played with the Left Hand root and chords contained within an octave.
A clearer to see video in stereo, is downloadable at http://www.bushgrafts.com or
try the Higher quality version here -
http://youtube.com/watch?v=XYMjBQz-CaM&fmt=18 - but why do Youtube raise the original volume level to cause clipping on the higher quality version of the video - if the original video was OK, surely that can be controlled when converted?

  • Molto bravo.Solo una piccola critica, spero costruttiva,io mi sforzerei di più sull'uso del 2 e del 4,cioè a pensarli come due calamite che attirano le altre note.ciaoo

  • i like iit

  • Doug, Excellent (Invaluable) instruction. Would love to see same for Satin Doll. (,,,yup, never satisfied.) but I guess that is what it's all about. Thanks again.

  • you definately got that swing

  • wat i hate is that there r no words

  • wow this is all great, is there a place i can get the sheet music for these songs identical to what you have posted here?

  • Wish I had a piano again This would really make it fun,.

  • Great to hear you makin all us wannabees feel bad with your exceptional playing. During some of this I almost thought I heard Errol Garner grunting. The implied and actual walking 10ths really added interest. It had a different stylistic feel.

  • This is very different for you.. It sounds great! btw,,I'm glad to hear you mention the clipping issue - a source of great frustration, and I thought it was just me!

  • Nice "modern ragtime".
