In Columbia Pictures' The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

Don't you guys think it would have been pointless remaking the same movie? Maybe that's why they changed it

Also the antagonists in this movie were weak. In the Original, John Kresse was a nacissistic dick. He was ex special forces, a big guy who carried an annoying swagger. By the time he was "Defeat does not exist in this dojo, Does it! Pain does not exist in this Dojo Does it?". You already hated him and understood why the bullies were the way they were. Something that was not well executed in the remake. His counterpart was just blah.

This remake missed the point of the original. The original wasnt a martial arts movie. The movie was about the power of friendship between two people who come from opposite poles (i.e. east vs west, old vs young). We fell in love with the original not because of the martial arts scenes but because of its heart. The relaxed chemistry between Maccio and Morita. Though this film had its moments it really does not capture the heart of the original.

Ya, I agree the original one was much more believable and realistic. The new Karate Kid ending didn't make sense to me at all. Jayden gets his leg broken in the semi-final, his opponent bested Jayden and could've won the legit way and prevent Jayden from going to the finals. Instead, his stupid coach ordered him to break the rules resulting in Jayden going to the finals which is what they didn't want. Then Jayden beats the antagonist which is an even more skilled opponent with only one leg?
