In October 2010, Simon Norfolk began a series of new photographs in Afghanistan, which takes its cue from the work of nineteenth-century British photographer John Burke. Norfolk's photographs reimagine or respond to Burke's Afghan war scenes in the context of the contemporary conflict. Conceived as a collaborative project with Burke across time, this new body of work is presented alongside Burke's original portfolios.

  • "if I thought I could get across the points I want to make without beauty, then I would dump beauty tomorrow."

-- Why would Norfolk dump the beauty he can find and photograph and share?! No really, why would he (semi-proudly it seems to me) forswear beauty?

  • John Burke was Irish not British.

  • i was there too :

my pictures can you see on flickr:

  • Absolutely beautiful and historically important, both visually and politically

  • @ lanaana: You are correct, of course, liberals see the truth as a virus. It gets in the way of their own desires. I will let you have the last word...it's the only thing a consumate liberal can accept.

  • @lanaana: It is JUST to criticize him b/c my opinion counts too. I was in Afghanistan when it was at peace, a backward county at best. Disagreeing with him is not the issue, the truth is what matters. He spoke a great untruth. His sense of self-importance is what drives him to speak falsehoods. He believes in himself more than the truth. He may not have made the movie under leisurely circumstances but hard work isn't cause to excuse his ignorance of the truth. A nice game of chess anyone?

  • It is simply wrong to criticize Norfolk for presenting his opinion, which was formed in the country where you are not going to travel to any time soon. You may disagree with his liberal views, but you still need to have respect for Norfolk and those who filmed this movie and travel with him.It does not matter if Norfolk is being self-important - he did not make this movie during some leisure trip.He spent a long time in the country where traveling is extremely dangerous Have some respect!

  • @lanaana Norfolk was claiming America was an imperialist nation and totally responsible for the discord in Afghanistan (not true). I regret the Afghan people are spoils of war. Norfolk was being self-important. He fails to understand that wars must be fought sometimes even if you are against war (I’m against war). My cheap shot at him in no way is the moral equivalent of the trash he was spewing.

  • Norfolk did an incredible job!

There is no need to say crap about him, Ron.

Just because he feels for these people , you suggest he should move there? Come on... Don't be ridiculous!

  • This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing it.
