This is a simple device I made for my Mom, who is having memory problems and can't remember if she locked her front door or not. She can see this from where she sleeps and if she wakes up and sees the red LED, it means her door is locked and she can go back to sleep.

Just a basic JT circuit using a 1" ferrite bead instead of a toroid, 22 ga. bifilar windings, 2N3904 transistor and a 1k resistor. I modded a simple reed switch which is activated by 2 neo mags I hotglued to the lock knob. I used a very small red LED because she leaves this on almost 24 hours/day because her door is locked almost all the time. So far, in a month, I have only had to swap "dead" batteries once. Pretty good run time. For more info: Overunitydotcom.

  • This is a great application. I think I might get confused though if I had a bad memory. If the red light is on, does that mean there is a problem (red=danger) or does it mean the door is locked and safe? The red LED could be replaced with a display that would show the words: LOCKED or UNLOCKED. As long as your mother has no problem remember what the red LED means, then no worries. Cool vid.

Thank you. Yes, what you are saying is correct. I made this very quickly but did give it some thought. I considered green but, green means go so does that mean it is locked or unlocked? But, your idea of a display that read "Locked" would end all discussion. I am not sure how much energy that would use up though. To be honest, she remembers the red means locked..."most" of the time, but not always. She is 82 and gets confused easily.

Thanks for comment and your idea.

Thank you very much Jeanna. I had to come up with something fast and the old JT circuit was perfect for this.

  • Nice job, Bill

    I like this application.

Also, I like how you use the reed switch with the magnet.

    This is a great idea...

    thanks for showing this,

Thanks man, I do appreciate the kind words. Thanks for the info on the reed switch...I didn't even try Radio shack as my local store carries next to nothing it seems. The best part about this circuit, and remember it is not hotrodded in any way, is the battery longevity. This works very well in this application. I saw your welding video and, nice job on the yard sale find. What a deal!
