From the CBC "Historian John Cornwell has become a lightning rod for controversy with the publication of Hitler's Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII in 1999. Soon after its publication, Cornwell appears on Hot Type to explain the hullabaloo over Hitler's Pope and assess the spotty record of the 20th century's most controversial pontiff.
Hot Type: John Cornwell on Hitler's Pope
• In his autobiography entitled Seminary Boy, John Cornwell recalls running with young thugs in London's East End. But he later became a devout altar boy and studied to enter the priesthood.

• The Vatican gave Cornwell access to secret documents so he could disprove rumors of Pius XII's collusion with the Nazis, but instead, these papers only confirmed evidence of such claims.
• Despite damning allegations made against him, Pope Pius XII was declared "venerable" - a posthumous recognition of virtue - in September 2000, putting him one step closer to official sainthood. He must next be declared "beatified" (blessed), a title bestowed only on martyrs or those who have performed miracles."
@CatholicCreed After what happened to the jews they might just be a little biased. Not disagreeing with what your saying. Just saying.

The point is: you will find little or nothing in randomly chosen phenomena or utterings of Hitler or his henchmen (one of whom as the present Pope 'als Hitlerjugend'), that will decide whether he was Christian or not. All Germany was Christian, one way or another, and to my mind, it is the history since the Christeros War that demonstrates who the Papacy promoted and demoted in her frenetic drive to monitor world affairs... The dictators were all favourites of the Papacy, no other religion...

to Hitler knew these things. It is only the working classes who believe in the greater bullshit that the church shovels at them. Witness how even the Jesuits (including 'the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus' (aka Northwest Jesuits), paid out 166 million dollars for buggering Indian and Alaskan children, a lot of them in colleges. It still does not take from their campaign to cover the globe with universities as in India and the US. Are we to believe they bugger nowhere else ??????

A lot of people in power, including Cardinals and Politicians, have always seen through the diet of Chalk statues that the RCC gives to the working and impoverished classes. They have always tolerated the Mediteranean Myth and the violation of the confessional in favour of the greater good of Capitalism and the ordering of a capitalist society. The would even tolerate the Jesuits, Dominicans, Franciscans -- for the greater good of Christian World Government. Most of the Dictators from Constantine

Israel named a Park AFTER Pope Pius X11 FOR his great work in saving many, many Jews during WW2 , called PACELLI FOREST.
'They' just are playing the victim card yet again.
Meanwhile Israel today runs a Concentration Camp in Gaza.

So did the factor in that Hitler wanted to take over the Vatican and destroy the church to create one that made him a God. Did they factor in that the Catholic church had its priests hide 200,000 Jews from the Germans. Or is this documentary based on a singular views looking to only snippets of information to support its predifined conclusion.

If you reflect upon the present Pope's support of Iran (because it is anti-secular) and his resistance to Turkey joining the EU (because they openly desire a secular state), you already get an idea of the truth of what John Cornwell's thesis. And if you go back to Mexico at the turn of the century -- the 'Christeros War' --, trace the Chruch's interests to the Spanish Civil war, and to Franco's helpers in Mussolini and Hitler, then the thest becomes obvious!

John Cornwell's problem is not with his thesis. I think anyone who knows anything about the history of the RCC knows of its totalitarian nature. The problem is in convincing Catholics, most of whom never read a iota of the Chruch's history or, indeed, have developed a sense of history, a critical faculty or a curiousity about Roman power. Sometimes I think it is a sine qua non of Catholic belief to be so resistant to historical enquiry. Hence the ridiculous belief in myths and miracles. . .

@tikletik I say the Pope of Rome is free to be the bridge builder, not being held by any cannon...."she is subject to no writings or issues in synodical documents, on account of the eminence of her pontificate .....even as in all these things all are equally subject to her (the Church of Rome) according to sacerodotal law." ~ St Maximus the Confessor of Constantinople around 650 A.D.
