Ein typischer Schwarmfisch ist als Einzeltier schreckhaft. Das ist eine Voraussetzung für eine Schwarmbildung mit engem Zusammenhalt der Einzeltiere.
Für den Zusammenhalt des Schwarmes spielen Faktoren wie Wellenbewgungen im Wasser und Kommunikation über Boten- bzw. Schreckstoffe eine Rolle.
Schwarmtiere verlassen ihren Schwarm nicht freiwillig, weil sonst die Vorteile verloren gehen. Daraus folgt, dass Schwarmverhalten angeboren und unabhängig vom Vorhandensein von Fressfeinden ist.
Unter den Aquarienfischen sind Schwarmfische selten. Aquarienfische sind eher gesellig. D.h. die Tiere können im Schwarm zusammen bleiben, müssen es aber nicht.
