This bouncy little tune was written by Edmundo Ros as a tribute to Queen Salote of Tonga who stunned the crowds of London as she made her way to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Despite the rain, Queen Salote insisted on an open carriage and smiled and waved to all the people. A year later, Elizabeth II visited Salote in Tonga.

As for the reasoning behind her keeping the carriage open...Tongan culture dictates that one keep their head uncovered before persons of higher rank. HM Queen Salote Tupou II was showinging deference to the Monarch of a larger country. She also said that she was mafana or filled with joy from the occassion and wanted to join the People in showing her happiness for the new Queen and Her Subjects. To Tongans she will be remembered as the Queen who brought Tonga to the world.

@ nastykurtbadboy Tonga was never colonized we only had a Treaty of Protection/Friendship with Great Britain and entered the Commonwealth as a fmr. protectorate of the British Empire. We've always had a royal family in one form or another. We are only member state to have our own Head of State within the Commonwealth.

Did you know why this song was written? ...because on the day of the Queens Coronation, it rained but she refused to go in a closed carriage and also refused an umbrella..., instead.... preferring to get wet. ... that's whats the song is about.. A humble queen to be sure..
