In this view coming into 233rd St. on the 2 line on January 9,1995, is the R-110A New Technology Train, the prototype for the R142 and R142A cars which now are in service on the 2,4,5 and 6 lines. The train was being tested, which is why the doors were opened on the "off" side. There were no passengers on board. The R110A and it's sister R110B (designed to be tested in the IND or B Division) were first delivered in 1992. The MTA was looking to replace it's aging fleet of subway cars with New Technology cars for it's next generation of subway car equipment. The R110A train was built by Kawasaki and the R110B train was built by Bombardier. At first glance the R110A can look almost like the R142 cars, however the differences are with the car numbers which are numbered from 8001 thru 8010. Also, the 'A' cars (cars equiped with a motormans' cab) do not have the red strip by the doors behind the cab and it doesn't have the red cover by the headlights. The R-110A train ran until 2000. It is currently in storage in 239 St. Yard. There are currently no plans to reactivate it.

  • wow this train of Today was out in service in 1995 before I was born in 96 wow.

  • Hmmm... the sound it makes is similar to Taipei Metro's C301 trains. If I'm not wrong, this train was manufactured by Kawasaki, right?

  • WHO DISLIKED THE 3PICDOM OF AWESOMNESS???

  • @SuperCoolDude2014

    R110A > R142A > R142 > R62

damn, the 1 really needs new cars..

  • The doors opened on the wrong side so nobody would get in or out. :)

  • I can see why the R110B was discarded as a selection; It had 2 cabs for each carriage! I've never seen a train with (AAAA)(AAAA) sets, besides the R68/As..

  • @Roboboy Them Bombardier motors are also on Alstom, right?

  • R110A>R142A

  • @123valid to me in my opinion, they sound more like the C301 Kawasaki train.

  • Believe it or not. It says on wikepedia that a new possible train called the r211 will replace the r46's in 2015.
