On 30th Dec. 1978 a News crew flew along the NZ coast from Wellington in pursuit of reported UFOs. They filmed a small number of strange objects and this is the enhancement and analysis of some of that footage. I have found that this object is a Man made garbage bag hoax device and not a genuine UFO however, some of the objects seen on radar may have been genuine UFO. • I believe you are mixing up your UFO encounters. 31 Dec 1978 was the case of the Kaikoura Lights alongside the eastern coast of New Zealand, not Bass Straight. The Kaikoura events saw numerous unexplained objects tracked on radar, and often flying in formation, which belies any attempt to think of them as "garbage bags" or some such nonsense. Bass Straight, on the other hand, was the site of major UFO activity in October of 1978, including the infamous Frederick Valentich disappearance.

  • @VampireYoshi You are right. Thanks for alerting me of this. I have corrected the text info. I stand by what the video analysis shows re the garbade bag in the video analysis. However this does not mean the others or at least one was a genuing UFO that showed up on radar. Please read the item on my blog page re red UFOs hoax. This does tie in well on what has occurred in more recent years. Genuine UFO seen, "someone" lets off hoax devices. This is repeated world wide. I have studied this aspect

  • This is a tried and tested Hoax Device used the world over. The large garbage bag is tied to a wire hoop at the opening and a diagonal wire holds the ignition source. The size of the bag and position of flame allows these device to act like hot air balloon and continue until the fuel runs out which could be 20 minutes or more. I have seen and videoed over 50 events plus retrieved a fallen device. Many have not studied these to the extent I have. These are common in UFO video footage.

  • i can see the bass strait from my house im on the tasmanian side

  • on the spirit of tass i did see 3 ufos lites so did my wife wewher on the deck for 4 ours to see the end of the land and seen that and than the lites came from no wher and close

  • I remember seeing the news footage. The plane was at high altitude and the lights were quite bright and large - (estimations of brightness over distance). I doubt the bag idea holds. More likely an atmosphere effect we still no little about - or little green men. Sometimes our Earthy explanations can be more fantastic than the possibility of it being a genuine UFO..

  • ok but do you not think the size of the flame would melt the bag
