@DiabolusIgnis : Not all vikings were war-like. Many of them just came to settle in different regions, and live off the land of other countries.

@papaburger Eh... Just like any other people was at the time. Except for killing unarmed monks, which even the vikings didn't do, except for a few renegades found in any people anywhere. The vikings killed/wounded anyone in their way, be they armed or not. Those who didn't want to stand against the vikings most likely survived.
So, just like any other people, really. They just called their looting looting, instead of war and taxes.

@MadiBebe infact is that the vikings were scandinavian peasents, the only diffrence from an grower peasent is that they went out to plunder or trade.

das hat beim besten willen fast gar nichts mit der kampftechnik der wikinger zu tun, diese haben es ihrer religion nach auf ein direktes kräftemessen angelegt, auf das stärkere gewinnt.

Vikings were warriors not peasants. They had a warrior class and scandanavian peasants were better fighters than any other militia on the continent.
Hoplites used shields like you do, the trained legionary swordsman did not. I hope you realize that you lose over a foot in reach when you strap a shield and tactical flexibility.
Vikings defeated as wide a range of enemies as Rome did. They were the best inantry in the world at the time(warrior class). Just ask the Byzantine emperor.

Outside of Greece, pretty much every shield was held in the fist without enarmes until about AD 1000. A lot of reproduction viking shields are made - incorrectly - with arm straps/enarmes, but there is no evidence that the originals were held held differently than shown in the film.
