They beat the Spartans back after hundreds of years of Spartan tyranny. Phillip was trained by them and used their own methods against them. That's how they were beaten. If ancient Greece had any kind of unity amongst it's city states, it's arguable whether homo hating would be such a useful tool for piss poor-statesmen as it is today. Dude, they were undefeated for 8 years until King Phillip annihilated them. 8 years is pretty damn good. Plus, if you're the guys fighting them, wouldn't you be a little scared that 300 Gay guys are coming right at you. But the Sacred Band of Thebes held their ground. They fought till the death. Dead to the last man! When one of Alexander's generals went to inspect the bodies (this guy is straight) he saw them grasping each other's hand. Even at death they were together. So he gained respect for them and shit. He told Alexander of this and a memorial was erected. (No pun intended.)

There has been some debate as to whether or not all of the warriors were killed. Some texts say that only 254 warriors were killed and the rest were wounded.
