Cal Poly Pomona 425 History Video - Engineering

The Classroom, Laboratory, and Administrative building, better known as the CLA building is a trademark of Cal Poly Pomona. Its triangular design and pointed arch are unique and identifying features that make it original among other buildings in the region and a sense of pride among its students and faculty. Unfortunately though, the CLA building shares something with engineering during the 19th century that was quite widespread, and that is failure.




During the 19th century as Industrialization boomed failures where seen

The Thames Tunnel an engineering project of Marc Isambard Brunel and his son Isambard Kingdom Brunel flooded during its excavation in 1828, the tunnel was completed in 1843. It was the first underwater tunnel.The crystal place was made in Hyde Park, London, England, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. In 1936 the building was destroyed due to a fire.

The biggest problem is associated with the buildings structural safety.
Amanda Newfield in her article for The Poly Post entitled CLA Building points towards failure writes, Architecture professor Gary McGavin, who has a degree in geology and served on the California Seismic Safety Commission from 1991-99, previously told The Poly Post that because the bracing in the building's steel structure does not reach the ground, it is the ideal example of a collapse-hazard building This instability makes it suspect to earthquakes, even though it performed well during the 2008 Chino Hills earthquake. the same problems that Engineers 150 years ago faced are still faced by them today.
The CLA building is due to begin its deconstruction in 2013 and will be replaced by a new student services building.
