I still agree with you though, KOF has always been far superior to SF (except 2001 and MIs... brr), just not as casual friendly.

Keeping fictional opinions in play, Oswald is an assassin and therefore would easily team up with Ash and kill anyone he wanted him to kill if offered enough money (which was the case as shown in his team's ending), and since he lacked any of the Sacred Treasures (the powers Ash wanted), there was no such danger to him in teaming up with Ash (barring the obvious dangers that come with entering KOF in the first place). He's just doing his job ;)
