I gathered some of the hardest part's of songs on the drums. I made this video and it is my personal opinion. I hope you enjoy the video :)

*NOTE*
There are so much impossible things i couldt put here. I dont have the drum cam footages from old DT (awake, falling into infinity, etc). This is why i dont put Old dream theater stuff here.

  • @RandomVideo1234567 really...

  • There's one more... but that's reserved for his wife :/

  • The thing is DT weren't looking for an independent, interpretative drummer like Thomas Lang or Virgil Donati. They just needed a guy who could play circles around Portnoy so he could take care of the older parts and could do anything they wrote for him.

The members of DT are recovering the creative ground Portnoy used to tyrannize. It's easier without that extra variable, and I'm sure they'll be comfortable enough in the next album to give Mangini much more room to shine.

  • @TheOctane47

Mangini is at least as technical as Portnoy but I'm not sure he could make Dream Theater sounds as good as Portnoy did. Portnoy rules, yes !!

  • @lpdark32

Actually I heard an interview of Petrucci saying that all the drums parts of ADTOE had been written by Petrucci himself (but played by Mangini of course...). So we still do not know what would be the drum style of Mangini for Dream Theater. Next album :-)

  • @RandomVideo1234567 I know its just fun, but Mike Mangini said in the video The Spiritcarries on that Mike and Mike :D are very good friends cheers !

  • I guess I've taken for granted(after so many years) what a genius he is. I mean to play this stuff and make it look and sound comprehensible is incredible in its self but to dream it up in the first place, Jeeze.

  • Seems like no one seems to realize that Mangini did not write his drum parts and even Petrucci said you wouldn't hear any of his influence on the album since Petrucci wrote the drum parts.

  • I miss Portnoy's style. He utilizes everything on the drum. Comparing to Mangini's playing on Dramatic Turn of Events, all you hear is steady beats. I am no drum expert but that is my opinion

  • portnoy.. creativity, skills, speed, clean musicality... mangini- foot speed hand speed and thats it?.... protnoy rules
