Daring to Change: An Exclusive Interview with Mauricio Funes

On March 15, Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) became the first leftist party to clinch the presidential election in the history of El Salvador. By 10 PM, it became clear to Salvadorans and to the world that the former guerrillas had ended more than 130 years of oligarchy and military rule over this tiny Central American nation. In the streets, thousands of red-shirted sympathizers chanted "Si Se Pudo!" (Yes We Could), while they celebrated the victory of Mauricio Funes, the man who brought an end to the 20 year rule of the Nationalist Republican Alliance party (ARENA.)

Though Funes, a former journalist, is the best-known Salvadoran on television, he is little known outside the region. Thanks to a collaboration between The Nation magazine and New America Media (NAM) NAM reporters Roberto Lovato and Josue Rojas had the opportunity to interview Funes on the night of his election. Funes discusses numerous issues: the meaning of his presidency, the relationship to the United States, immigration and other domestic and foreign policy concerns. It is the first interview with Funes translated for an English-speaking audience.

funes sos una mierda sinceramente... no ha habido cambio, las calles se han llenado de hoyos, pudiste vetar el articulo 191 ante la corte suprema pero te valio verga y el frente quiere sileciar lo medios. Dijistes que ibas a ayudar a la empresa privada, nos has agregada mas impuestos y nos quitas la declaracion de renta, y para mas joder el crimen a aumentado de 13 a 20 homicidios diarios desde que llegastes aun cuando usas las tropas, que para mas joder las quieren quitar el frente...

Yo aunqe si bien es verdad acabo de venir no conosco a nadie que haya sabido de un muerto, pero yo vi una entrevista donde decian que los muertos por dia abian disminuido segun estadisticas. habria qe comprobar esos datos, los que creo es muy dificil de alterarlos ya qe se hacen a la vista de muchas personas, y cualquiera pude desmentir eso facilmente (con hechos, proof, data) cosa que nadie lo ha hecho. Hasta entonces m atrevo a ablar de si hay + muertos o no
