Part 1: Adios Carenage from Derek Walcott's epic poem, The Schooner Flight.

This poem is amazing! Check my channel for the playlist from which you can view the sections in sequence.

The book in which this poem appears, The Star Apple Kingdom, is now out of print. This is not my poem! This poem is by Nobel laureate Derek Walcott. I am only sharing the work to spread the joy of poetry. If you are the owner of the work and would like this video removed, please inform me and I will do so immediately.

  • Would you mind explaining some of the first part? What does the guy mean when he says to the lady, "Sweep soft, you witch, 'cause she don't sleep hard."

  • @torson1212 , he's saying that the lady he's leaving is still sleeping, so the the lady on the street sweeping should sweep softly so that she doesn't wake her.

  • Thank you for this brotha

  • @kirkramdath That makes sense, I probably should have looked at it a little harder. I'm actually giving a presentation on just this section of this poem, so thanks!
