Transferring maps and data to Garmin GPS units

Visit http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp to download the basecamp software from the Garmin website. Use the software to transfer maps and data between a computer and your Garmin GPS unit.

if I download new maps to my Legend HCx, will it remove or overwrite the existing basemap that is installed on it?

@joesz100 No, it will not. Once installed, you may need to activate the maps by pressing the menu button while on the map page, scrolling right to the "map information" screen (represented by the blue "i"), and checking the box next to the maps.

@takeahikeGPS any idea where to get free australian maps for lowrance handheld gps? Also, what file type is the maps? Is it .map?

is the mapinstall the software to allow you to create routings on the computer? is it free? can it work on basemaps also? In the instance that i'm programing this to a non-memory card GPS, how much memory will this feature take up in the GPS?
