Jimmy Rushing was born in 1899, according to the 1900 census, which helps explain his pleasantly archaic playing style. He was five years older than Pete Johnson, for instance. An interesting pianist to compare to Rushing is Freddie C. Washington, who was born in the 1880s and recorded "Lulu's Mood" with Zutty Singleton for Capitol in 1944.
