I do the t shape thing and i can sort of rip through half of it, but then it stops and i cant get the "crack" that u are talking about.

If you can tear up a bit and it stops means that you are on the right track in managing to rip it open. Sometimes you just need to regrip to be able to continue the ripping. ONe important thing when trying to initiagte the rip is to hold hands tight until the rip on the book is completely through top down.

Thanks that helped alot but now all of the phone books i have left are thick and i cant rip them

Don't forget to use the increased leverage you got with thicker books. The rounded slope you get is wher you put this leverage onto with your knuckles/fingers when rotating the palms inwards.

Very logical, but my mum won't let me try. Do you think I could do it? (i'm almost 13 and fairly strong)

I ripped a phone book in half the hard way the first time i tryied, last time i faild, and ppl at work make fun of me, now im gonna use this style to show em. LOL. but really i was alot stronger before.
