Lebanon Government Collapses To Condemnation by U.S. Leaders

Lebanon's fragile government collapsed Wednesday with the walkout of eleven cabinet ministers over a UN-led investigation into the assassination of the country's former prime minister.

As the Hezbollah-backed dissolution of the government occurred, Lebanon's current prime minister, Saad Hariri, who is the son of the assassinated former leader, was meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House.

After the meeting, the White House released a written statement, saying, "The efforts by the Hezbollah-led coalition to collapse the Lebanese government only demonstrate their own fear and determination to block the government's ability to conduct its business and advance the aspirations of all of the Lebanese people."

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has denounced the event as well saying during a news conference in Doha, Qatar, """"We view what happened today as a transparent effort by those forces inside Lebanon, as well as interests outside Lebanon, to subvert justice and undermine Lebanon's stability and progress.""

Hezbollah, the Shiite Muslim political organization and militia, as well as its allies withdrew from the government after months of negotiations failed to arrive at a compromise over a tribunal probe into the 2005 assassination of Rafik Hariri.

The tribunal is expected to accuse Hezbollah members of complicity in the killing, which led the group to warn that it would refuse to hand over any suspects. The group has also demanded with no success that Hariri disavow the tribunal.

Obama commended the prime minister in the White House statement for his "steadfast leadership and efforts to reach peace, stability and consensus in Lebanon under difficult circumstances."

The collapse of the Lebanese government sees the likely end of a May 2008 agreement that ceased fighting between the country's pro-Western political group and a Syria and Iran-backed coalition.
