Music from the current off-broadway hit Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris CD set to visuals depicting 'Sons Of' from around the world.
We have no disagreement. While we're at it, let's give a nod to the translators from the French, Blau and Schuman. It takes care to maintain the essence of what was said in the original language. Here's a Wiki link that I think gives admirable exposition to the artist.
Check out Brel's Wiki citation. Lots of valuable info there.
@lskarin You're certainly entitled to your opinion. Perhaps I'd feel different if I were viewing this piece in the context of a play or a show. However, my experience does not include the entire venue and my comparison is based upon the two singular performances. In that regard, I find Judy Collin's emotive rendition rather moving. I also find her vocal style immensely appealing.
Let's agree to disagree. This is part of a revue called Jacques Brel is Alive and Living in Paris.
Part of your judgement is performer and background preference. Gay Marshall is from Broadway tradition. Judy Collins is from popular folksong tradition, and I do not say that disparagingly.
Just for fun, compare the performances of Heart Like a Wheel by Linda Ronstadt and the person who wrote it, Kate McGarrigle.
Pause at 1:05. Look at this kid. What does he see? Who is he saluting? He looks so tired. Overwhelmed. There has to be a story connected to this picture.
I know that I have commented before, but, this video deserves an award. I know it is not possible, but a Nobel Prize for Peace would be in order here. Thank you so much for this brilliant post. I cry every time I see it. When will it all end? Namaste
Jesus Loves The Little Children of The World - To the Jew First God Bless All Red, Yellow, Black or White may they all be covered by the blood of sprinkling. The blood speaks their names - Please pray for all of our sons and daughters of war. Love me
so moving and so appealing. This song makes me a parent although i never had child of my own. This song makes me feel human. And so very sad.
