As far as we can ascertain, the secondary mode of the weapon seems to be a threat identifier, targeting mines, hidden explosive devices (such as the Dragon in secondary mode), and automatic guns. Though a powerful gun, the assault rifle's magazine is perhaps too small.

I'm not sure if it's the same for the N64 version (i never bothered with these back then) but on the xbox version,if you listen to the "bark" of the gunshot,it goes 5 times. so if you count "one two three four five" that's 10 rounds.

This challenge is known for it's difficulty because of frame roundoff error. The game CAN round off a ONE FRAME PUSH OF YOUR TRIGGER to represent two shots, VERY obvious when he goes down to 5+5 shots left.
