LuminAR reinvents the traditional incandescent bulb and desk lamp, evolving them into a new category of robotic, digital information devices. The LuminAR Bulb combines a Pico-projector, camera, and wireless computer in a compact form factor. This self-contained system enables users with just-in-time projected information and a gestural user interface, and it can be screwed into standard light fixtures everywhere. The LuminAR Lamp is an articulated robotic arm, designed to interface with the LuminAR Bulb. Both LuminAR form factors dynamically augment their environments with media and information, while seamlessly connecting with laptops, mobile phones, and other electronic devices. LuminAR transforms surfaces and objects into interactive spaces that blend digital media and information with the physical space. The project radically rethinks the design of traditional lighting objects, and explores how we can endow them with novel augmented-reality interfaces. LuminAR was created by Natan Linder and Pattie Maes from the Fluid Interfaces Group at the MIT Media Lab. Video produced by Paula Aguilera and Jonathan Wiliams.

I don't care what they say. You cannot beat the positive feedback you get from a keyboard. I hate tapping away on touch screens and projections.

mitmedialab - fantastic innovation well done. The potential here is meteoric, why would any robot have a cumbersome screen after this idea? It completely opens up two-way telepresence (skype etc) to the elderly or disabled or even perhaps television/video projection through you robot.

    You've definitely got my respect!

I keep seeing things like this that are amazing and such, yet it doesn't seem to get implemented anywhere. Especially the idea of projecting an interface onto a surface that you can interact with. It is possible and has been done, yet not implemented anywhere. Its not that we aren't ready for it so what is the problem? Too expensive? Other problems? What do you think?

Most of you don't get this.

This is a stepping stone for much greater technology.

I find this idea absolutely amazing, and cannot wait for the holographic interface to come in several years.

What a stupid, pointless idea. Is he seriously basing his arguments on “free the poor poor pixels”? I can do that with my touchscreen too! By *moving* it!

It’s like the the Segway: All the technology becomes pointless, when you place the two wheels *behind* each other, like with a *bike*! ^^

Same thing here. Have a display foil with touch sensitivity, and you’re done.

    Epic

    1. ANd the keyboard can't beat this this

    2. It would be a less wonderous world if people waited until it was completly worked out in form and function before posting it.

that is an amazing product, kudos on making that, one point of criticism though, you look like Ryan from the office when hes high on cocaine. your facial expression kind of conveys a "i don't know what the hell is going on" look, but other than that amazing product. If this was $100-200 I would most definitely get it.

I don't think so, as humans we naturally pick up and play with objects that are pleasing to handle, think about bubble-wrap, it's in our nature to want things with tactile feedback - display of moving 2D images onto flat surfaces like walls and floors is not exactly "natural" either! I like my keyboard, the physical feel of the keys helps prevent typos, without that positional feedback my fingers go astray!
