Couple tips (I've been playing guitar for a few years) Try resting your hand on the bridge, (The piece at the bottom of the strings) and only use your wrist to play, try not to use your arm ;)

oh and something else, i recomend to let your nails grow, because when you are a beginner it's better to play with your fingers, i think that it should fix your hard picking problem

dont let your nails grow out, it doesn't help at all, only hinders performance if you plan on using a pic for most things, also as someone said its all in your wrist, literally, if you have any questions message me, i have no life
