If Republicans actually believed that they'd do something to stop it from happening. They love welfare for corporations. For people, not so much.

  • George Will's mistake is that he is far from a centrist. The Republicans have shifted far from the center, their base is on the far right. If we are center right then McCain should have won easily, he lost badly. We are a center left country, the majority want health care, some kind of gun control, and want women to have a right to choose.

  • George Will is a political class clown to think this up.

  • Ok, I agree. Must have misunderstood him twice. I listened again and found you to be correct. Gotta so not write comments when I'm tired ;)

  • well said barefoot

  • Capitalism does not equal the opposite of Socialism. I personally like the idea of a reasonable social safety net and I think the amount of taxation required need not be overly burdensome to the extent that entrepreneurship would be impacted. I think an important precondition though would be to have a government run by people that don't think the government is an enemy to progress.

  • he said no subsidizing of pharma companies for pharma development. He didn't say no sponsoring of research. Why should the fruit of government funding be donated to private companies as opposed to being in the public domain?

  • How's about no banking welfare asshole ?

  • I would take it even further and add; no social welfare, no education welfare, no medical welfare, no housing welfare, and no more war on drugs; which is moral welfare.

    This list = Socialism

    I thought we were Capitalists.

  • No subsidizing for medical research? What an idiotic proposition. We live longer than 35 years because gov'ts have sponsored research and scientists. There are other ways to prevent excessive profiteering.

  • Sounds like a plan to me.
