Paul was an apostle of Jesus Christ. He claimed this term as referring to him, though he only met Jesus Christ after Jesus had ascended to heaven.

The English word "apostle" is related to the Greek word (in the New Testament) meaning "one who was sent". It is like an ambassador, but you could call any missionary sent to preach to a different people group an "apostle". Paul was a Pharisee sent to preach to the Gentiles.

A disciple is a follower or student.
