The Roma, or Gypsies, have been settled in what are little more than camps, separated from the rest of the city by partial walls. This settlement is on the outskirts of the Ukrainian city of Beragzsas in Transcarpathia. I was taken on a tour of the "village" by a Hungarian-Ukrainian minister, Arpad David, and the village council. The accompanying music I recorded at two Roma church services.

  • I believe they are speaking and singing in Hungarian but they call themselves gypsies. They define themselves as gypsies and are kept isolated from the rest of the city and its inhabitants who define them as gypsies. Many people in Transcarpathia are Magyar, including those who I stayed with and they called them gypsies. The church is referred to as a gypsy church by everyone I spoke with including the young German minister who was there to work with the gypsies.

  • The majority of these kids, people are not gypsies.

It is a sunday morning service but the the folks are

    mostly magyars.

  • This was absolutely one of the most moving things I have ever seen. I may be biased since I am good friends with Andrew Tonn. That said, my mouth was hanging wide open and my eyes were full of tears by the end of this film.
