This upload connects two lighter pieces from one of Rossini's first successful serious operas, "Tancredi", that were actually the first two numbers that I fell in love with when I began listening to the opera and that I haven't heard in a while, so I decided to upload them, as I still find myself falling for the sheer charm of the pieces.
The coretto actually precedes the Act One finale and celebrates the arranged marriage between Amenaide and Orbazzano in a simple ABA structure, contrasting the lyrical A section with the militant B section. A very slight choral scene, not one of Rossini best but one with a great deal of charm. In this case, it opens the finaletto from the Venice version of the opera which ends with the final reconciliation of the lovers, bringing the opera to the traditional happy ending, in contrast to the more revolutionary final number of the original, and it seems quite a fitting place for it. The finaletto itself is a simple succession of ariosos for both of the lovers and Amenaide's father and a final terzettino for all three but a very attractive one at that, and it doesn't come as a surprise that Alberto Zedda preferred to end his version of the score with the finaletto, rather than the more realistic but musically ordinary dramatic final cavatina. It also helps that a superlative cast is assembled in the present recording, putting to shame all other versions of the score.
Sumi Jo - Amenaide,
Ewa Podles - Tancredi,
Stanford Olsen - Argirio,
Anna Maria di Micco - Isaura.
Hope you'll enjoy :).
