  • I was hoping that the moral crackdown following 'Sachsgate' might actually have encouraged some comics to sharpen up a bit and not be so lazy sometimes.

Rather than just dropping in a line about cancer or peodophilia, or dropping in the c word for an easy shock laugh, why not stretch yourself and try to go back to a good old sharp, witty joke?

  • @fodsaks because as a form of mental release stand up comedy, in the UK in particular, is intrinsically linked to the discussion and furthermore rejection of stigma attached to taboo subjects and topics. The ability to startle and cross accepted boundaries is a large part of its lasting appeal and continuing innovation.

  • @rainfallshard And there was me thinking it was mainly about funny jokes.

  • @fodsaks Have a look at what comedy audiences tend to enjoy before you classify the term "funny." I've been to a "clean" christian comedy festival, because it was near my home, and after two acts I wanted to stop breathing.

  • Personally I think prank calls are about the lowest form of 'humour' known to man. But it does seem that the public outcry was disproportionate, I can't really comment as I don't live in the UK.

  • It wasn't a prank call... It was a previously arranged scheduled interview which Andrew Sachs didn't have his phone on to participate in.

  • @fodsaks You seem to think that there is a very strict distinction between shock value and wit. Frankie Boyle is a great subject for that. He is a very witty man, and some of what he says is out of the normal taste. Maybe your problem is you're looking in all the wrong places for decent comedy? (Or maybe you just don't have a very wide sense of humour.)

  • Must have been an odd time to be a comedian. He has it spot on though.

  • What a brilliant interview.

  • @BelfastAtheist Good point.

Oh wait. It's not. It's the exact opposite.

  • @deinse81

    Idiot.

  • I absolutely love Jimmy Carr.

  • @rainfallshard Well, I'd be FAIRLY sure that comedy audiences like funny jokes.

As for your Christian festival, I'm sure there are as many poor 'family' comedians as 'edgy' ones.

I've been to many comedy nights above countless pubs, where act after act has come on, sworn his head off, tried to get us all gasping in shock at jokes about illness, death, religion, etc, and barely raised a polite chuckle.

I'm not trying to clean up comedy, I'd just like the wit to come back in some quarters.
