@ovaltine11 That was a very sad time (they didn't even let him go another year to celebrate 30 years on that network).

I had the sugar cube too. Thanks for the memory jog.

You're so right, lenbehear. I'm a child of the '60's, am all too often appalled at the gracelessness of this age, to paraphrase Don Henley. I also remember receiving the sugar cube too for vacination!

Sure do miss the captain

Yes, and when they attempted to resurrect him, it didn't take....

I was one of those who received the polio oral vaccine via the sugar cube. My mother and I stood in line at the local elementary school for what seemed like forever. This was way back in the early '60s.
Our neighbor girl had polio and wore the heaviest of braces.

Remember CBS fired the captain!

Ohhh...those poor kids! You get polio, or got polio i should say, from like swimming in lakes that were polluted, right?
My mom was talking about how one of her aunts kept all the kids away from public pools and lakes saying they would get polio.

I had one of those cards! And I filled it up. I was 5 years old. We also collected, on Halloween, money for UNICEF. We made the recepticles out of milk containers in school and then we would say, "Trick or treat for UNICEF". If the people were nice, they gave candy too....
Our beloved Captain Kangaroo :-) He is someone that I looked up to for so many years!

Then, now, and forever in our memories, a class act of a wonderful man.
