Really?...wow I dnt think I heard of this before...He repeats when you tell him to but its like he doesnt know it if u dont tell him what to say...What he says by himself is more and no and his numbers...Im trying to teach him more stuff to say on his own and actually understand what he's saying.Thank you so much!!...Im going to go check out that website right now!! =) Ill let you know how it goes.

Yes I see tht flash cards are wonderful bc it does expand the questions u can ask...what makes my situation harder is the fact tht he doesnt really know how to talk...Im going to do vdeos of me working with him so u can see...He only repeats if u tell him to but other than that he doesn't really talk but we dnt know why

@kiah1love - Ahhhh...echolalia. Jake has this as well. Repeats is great because, for me at least, it let's me know that his voice is there, you just need to learn how to bring it out of him! I really like using the website starfall.com (especially the ABCs part) because with Jake's echolalia, when they said the letter and the sound it made, he would repeat it and get his mouth used to forming these sounds! Try it!

I found this book that helped me as well: Teaching Conversation to Children With Autism: Scripts And Script Fading - found it on Amazon.com

I would also like to comment tht he is a very intelligent child...Im workin for this lady who has a 4 yr old who I believe may be autistic and I have to teach him alot and its kind of hard...His attention span isnt even close to Jakes'...I was able to teach him to count from 1-10...I admire this and it reassures me tht I can teach him and help him more...im going to try flash cards next!! :) but how do u keep him concentrated?

@kiah1love - thank you for the compliment. Flash cards are really wonderful because you can ask so many different questions with each card. (i.e. what number? What shape? How many? What colors?, ect) I hate that I was giving Jake Skittles in this video, but it was what 'centered' him for the time being. Even thought I use them still when getting him to 'work', I should have used raisins or something healthy. Find out what your child will 'work' for. Games, tickles, chase, etc. Good Luck!

He is adorable, he is really doing a good job with the flash cards..does he go to school daily or are you just working with him. He really has a good attention span..I am working with my son but his attention span is not that good..he is easily distracted.

Thank you for your compliment. Jake has been in a typical daycare since he was 6 months old. Upon his diagnosis, he did receive 4 hours of ABA Therapy a day for 3 1/2 months Monday - Friday. @ a cost of $2,000 a month & we simply could no longer afford the cost (Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Alabama sees Autism as an Educational Diagnosis). He now attends a school w/ therapists onsite & is integrated into a typical preschool 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I do work w/ him daily.
