That's a very odd thing to say, seeing as in those days it was an extremely common thing here in the UK.

The big issue is the modern day victorian workhouse, people are paid a pittance to sell this mag while John Bird rakes in a fortune.

Bird's a Thatcherite. End of.

Who cares what he believes in politically - he's giving people a chance who would ordinarily be overlooked. If you look into the actual runnings of the Big Issue the sellers aren't "paid" as you claim, they are in fact partaking in induvidual franchises of the brand itself, purchasing the magazines upfront and making a profit on what they sell. It's up to them how many hours they put in. They have the same rights as you and I in the workplace, so it's nothing like the Victorian workhouse.

I think most folk miss the big picture - that's what john was trying to illustrate.

think global - act local should be everyones mantra - don't shy away from business - embrace it - but never forget that small or new business exist because of local people - local people are the first to be forgotten when it comes to expansion of successful business - the rick is to focus on community.

I mean - what's so "inspiring" and "ethical" about supporting a ban on soup kitchens?

He's a mouthpiece for the government, pure and simple.

Anyone who describes themselves as an "entrepeneur" should substitute the word "bastard".
