Kum Ba Yah or Kumbaya was apparently written simultaneously in Georgia, South Carolina, Angola, and a few other places in the 1920s. While this televisial feast does not claim any ownership of the song's origin, it does explore some of the lesser known themes intended by the original writing and seems to do them justice. A unique treatment of a song which is older than the Queen of England.
Hate to break it to ya' but the song originated in South Carolina way before the 1920's. Some geeks from a "historical preservation society" came down and recorded it and of course they gave their own story considering the time. It's actually "Come By Here" and to the Yanks from Bangor Maine, it sounded like Kum ba Ya. American Missionaries took it over to Angola with the mispronunciation and thus it stayed.
