Gods in Okami are manifestations of humanity's faith in good. Yami is the opposite. He's the manifestation of humanity's dark intentions. His forms represent humanity's will to use technology to destroy, to burn, to gamble with anything and ultimately the tool that humanity uses to build this evil: by hand. Also I think that Yami's true form is a dolphin, the one species on Earth that is closest to humans in intelligence.

This game had such an awesome soundtrack... and this theme really made that hell of a battle a little more bearable. It felt like a reward for making it that far into the game. XD
They really need to make a real sequel, not something like Okamiden.

I've been wondering this: how come the video shows Amaterasu fighting Orochi if the final boss is Yami? Just a thing to consider.

That's because there aren't any official "big" and epic artworks of Ammy fighting Yami. Also, I wanted to avoid spoiling what the emperor of evil looks like for those who don't know.

Just a comment supporting the symbolism argument. I think there was a bit of hinting going on that Yami represented technology because it wasnt a iving thing, it was being controlled by that otter thing remember? And it transformed into multiple machine like things like the slot machine. What was up with the otter anyway? Maybe more light was supposed to be shed on this subject in the sequel that will never happen.

There will be Okamiden though, which is kind of like a sequel. I personally am not appealed enough by it so far, especially since it's on the DS (I don't have one).
