From "Leave Home" (2011)

LEAVE HOME AND BE A MAN

After several splits and compilations under their belt, Brooklyn, New York's The Men have finally released their first full length album, Leave Home, on Sacred Bones Records and it's a welcome dose of progressive, post-punk, melodic hardcore that will exhilarate and elevate the senses this scorching Summer.

Album opener "If You Leave..." begins with a sleepy synth and guitar lead in that expands into a My Bloody Valentine-esque wall of sound with a sweet guitar tone reminiscent of The Cult's Billy Duffy circa the Lovealbum. Nick Chiericozzi , Chris Hansell, and Mark Perro go into skronktastic, supernova overdrive on "Lotus" as the music shimmers, floats, and then plunges down to claw the mind. Chiericozzi and Hansell's guitar parts in "Think" burrow under the skin and the screaming clarinet heard during the lumberous breakdowns seems to channel the majestic spirit of Steve Mackay to generate a feeling of aural nausea.

Perro produces a dirge-like ominous drum beat in "L.A.D.O.C.H." while Hansell reaches deep inside for a primal roar that follows the cacophony of disillusion and resentment. One can literally hear the sounds of metal beat upon metal and glass breaking. Listening to "L.A.D.O.C.H." is like taking a sonic crowbar to the face.

Helter-skelter bedlam is invoked in "( )" as the magical sounds of early Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. get summoned and the urgent rawness of "Bataille" has some of the best angry guitar ever recorded. It's uplifting, entrancing, and violence-inducing. Slow burn guitar lines wrap and blend into each other in "Shittin' With The Shah" to form a tremolo-filled tapestry only to be ripped asunder in the fiery outro.

The Men laid down a lot of superior, supersonic groundwork on Leave Home. It should be very interesting to see where the future takes them.
