Joann was born in Glasgow, Scotland and formed an interest in music and the works of Scotland's internationally renowned poet, Robert Burns, at a very early age. She entered, and won, her first Burns Competition at the age of five and continued to compete in music festivals and competitions until 1994. During her competitive years, Joann was a consistent prize winner and was awarded trophies for excellence in singing, as well as for her interpretations of Burns' works and other traditional Celtic music. Full details of her recordings of Burns and other music are available on her website www.glasgowgirl.com.
Joann was honored to be invited back home to Scotland to sing at the Homecoming 2009 celebrations. This historic event to honor the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scotland's national Bard, Robert Burns was launched by First Minister, Alex Salmond and was held in Glasgow Cathedral on the 25th of January - the exact date of Burns' birthday. This special service was organized by the Glasgow & District Burns Association and was broadcast live via the World Wide Web with hook ups to Burnsians in Russia and the USA.
In addition to her Burns work, she was also trained in the classical Italian style of singing. Joann has performed the major works of the classical repertoire with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors in Scotland and throughout Europe.
Her genuine love and admiration of the works of Robert Burns comes across in her unique interpretation and sensitive musical arrangements of his words and she is keen to ensure that his poetry is appreciated and enjoyed far outside their native land. Her performances and recordings reflect her experience and training in both the traditional and classical styles of music.
Joann currently lives in the USA and was awarded Honorary Membership of the Saint Andrew Society of Southern California in June 1997 in recognition of the unique and outstanding contribution she has made, and is continuing to make, to the furtherance of Scotland's culture and history in America.
She is in great demand as both singer and speaker at Burns' Suppers worldwide and also presents seminars for children and adults on his works. Full details on www.glasgowgirl.com.
Joann has also authored two children's books "Silly Wee Billy" and "Wee Billy Meets Jimmy Junior". Excerpts of her reading them can be viewed on you tube.
