Hi, Im in Arizona and have wanting to cook Handmade tortillas the way my grandmother did in Mexico. I have trying to dream up ways to make an affordable wood stove myself. I love that i found your video so thank you . . Can you tell me what type of iron or steel is ok for a comal? I would appreciate that so much.

Imusa makes a pre-seasoned cast iron comal. It's about $10 on Amazon. There are many others for sale on the internet as well. I think you'll also need to cure it with olive oil. Good luck. Post some photos or videos when you start making tortillas.

I have used regular bricks to make these stoves and they do work, but adobe works better because they it's lighter, provides better insulation and a hotter flame that burns up all the smoke.

I have built one with regular bricks (from home Depot). I made the half brick with a hammer and chisel. It did work, however the lighter the brick the more heat will be concentrated inside your combustion chamber. Give it a try.

Thank you. Larry Winiarski is a genius. I just pointed my camera at him and edited the results.

The great thing Winiarski was to lab test the optimal chimney length vs hearth, how much ventilation is needed, etc to make enough heat to create a smokeless fire. Many areas of the world have been cooking over a fire pit using a few stones to hold up the pot. This uses uses far too much wood, lots of smoke, and a danger for children to trip into the fire. Then he traveled there to show teach how to build & maintain with materials they already have, since there is no Home Depot down the street.

It's not an oven - it's a stove. Coleman makes camp stoves. They're not ovens, either.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. This type of stove is an old idea only it has been given a funky new name "rocket" stove. In reality this is just a variant of the old fashioned chip heater or chip stove.

You're saying it doesn't appear to be an oven?

It is a stove, for sure.

I like the smokeless concept but apart from that it doesn't appair to be like a stove at more more like a stove top to be honest
